Civil Servants Union Supports Quebec Charter of Values

PQ government has finally been able to successfully sway a civil servants union, the union of public and parapublic workers (SFPQ), which asserted to be extremely thankful to the government for listening to their long due demands to provide clear guidelines regarding religious accommodations.

The union mentioned in a statement that it had been seeking guidance from the government for the past six years to unambiguously clarify rules regarding how they should deal with members of the public who want bureaucrats to make religious accommodations. A union representative, Lucie Martineau, explained that for example when someone requests to be served by a particular man or a woman due to their religion and other religious reasons. The representatives of the union, which constitutes of more than 42,000 civil servants, announced their complete support for the Charter of Quebec Values.

Martineau elucidated that “when you are working for the state and if the state is secular, well then let’s confirm the employees are secular like the state.” She further added that, according to her, there is no real difference between political opinion and religion, alleging that “it is like employees of the state must be neutral with their political opinions. It is the same thing.” At the end of her statement, Martineau vowed that her union would not defend any member who is fired for wearing a veil or any obvious religious symbol, though at the same time alleging that she does not expects anyone to lose their job for religious reasons in the first place.
