In a recent announcement Reconciliation Canada has confirmed that Martin Luther King Jr.’s youngest daughter, Bernice King, is going to address a mass gathering of almost 50,000 people in Vancouver, who will then embark on a first Reconciliation Walk to revamp relations between First Nations and the rest of Canada. Martin Luther King Jr. is incredibly respected and known for delivering an unforgettable human rights speech “I Have a Dream” almost 50 years ago to marchers in Washington, calling for an end to racism in the U.S.

Now Mr. King’s daughter and a Baptist minister, Bernice, is planned to give the keynote address at the start of Vancouver’s walk on Sun., i.e. Sept. 22. The walk has been organized to sum up the Truth and Reconciliation Commission hearings that took place from Sept. 18 to 21 in Vancouver, as the sixth national stop for the court-ordered commission. The commission was tasked to acquire evidence from survivors of residential schools, regarding where First Nation children were sent after being separated from their families and culture.

A grassroots group that has organized the walk, Reconciliation Canada, aims to spread a message of hope and renewed relationships after hearing heartbreaking stories that were told to the commission during hearings at the PNE. Executive Director at Reconciliation Canada, Karen Joseph, stated that “[Bernice] King has said that we all have a responsibility to move our world toward a beloved community,” adding that “having Dr. King speak at our walk is especially meaningful, given that this year is the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington and her father’s ‘I Have a Dream’ speech.”
