Pivot Legal Society revealed during a press statement that the Vancouver landlord accused of owing thousands of dollars to tenants, George Wolsey, has finally turned him in to the provincial court. A Pivot lawyer, DJ Larkin, explained on Friday morning that Mr. Wolsey appeared before the Vancouver provincial court on Monday, which consequently ordered him to return to court for further proceedings on a scheduled appearance on Oct. 21.

Last week, Pivot Legal Society announced that it had successfully acquired 10 arrest warrants in an almost three-year battle against the “notorious” Wolsey, asking him to pay back the $18,000 he owes to 10 former residents of Wonder Rooms SRO hotel, i.e. the Downtown Eastside single-room occupancy hotel he used to own. A wanted poster was displayed last week by the advocacy group, illustrating a photo of Mr. Wolsey, after he had failed to appear in court.

The court granted civil warrants against Mr. Wolsey, which implied that he was not wanted for some criminal act and was not formally charged with any criminal offences. On the contrary, such warrants are made against those who fail to show up on predetermined court dates. Pivot’s Lawyer, Larkin, elucidated that almost 10 former hotel tenants were to be awarded $18,163.75 in damages in May for enduring “rampant infestations, serious risks to health and safety and unlivable conditions.” Larkin alleged that Wolsey’s surrender is a huge victory for the tenants who began fighting for improved conditions in the building more than two years ago.
