The recently fired Bloc Québécois MP Maria Mourani has finally spoken out her side on the recent controversy on Friday as tensions keep on growing over the proposed Charter of Quebec Values. The Montreal MP mentioned in a statement issued on Friday morning that “I am leaving the Bloc Québécois,” after being booted out of the Bloc caucus by leader Daniel Paillé for speaking out against the charter. During a news conference held at her home, Mourani stated that “I cannot subscribe to this. The debate should be democratic and open.”

In light of the recent dismissal, differences between the sovereignty movement have further grown as angry sovereignists speak against Paillé for trying to muzzle his most popular MP. Mourani’s morale was praised by former premier Jacques Parizeau’s wife, Lisette Lapointe, who gave a bold statement over the issue. Lapointe tweeted: “The take it or leave it of the current leader brings back painful memories. We are with you, courageous Maria.” Lapointe had herself quit the Parti Québécois caucus in a dispute with leader Pauline Marois over following the party line. In a radio interview on Friday, Lapointe defended Mourani during a 98.5 FM radio show, stating that her husband too condemns the expulsion.

Meanwhile, a former PQ leader, Bernard Landry, also spoke out in favor Mourani, alleging that “I am deeply saddened,” because even though he disagreed with Mourani’s point of view, she had the right to express it and shall not be punished for that.
