A self-alleged “Freeman-on-the-Land” who had declared a Calgary rental home to be an embassy, Andreas Pirelli, has been arrested by police without incident on early Friday morning and will remain in custody of Calgary Police. As many as nine warrants were issued by courts in Quebec against Mr. Pirelli, though police has not yet released any details of the warrants. He is anticipated to remain in police custody for at least six days, after which he is expected to be transported to Quebec, where he is known as Mario Antonacci.

Record shows that Pirelli rented a duplex home in Calgary from a retiree, Rebekah Caverhill, back in 2011, soon after which he declared it as an embassy and refused to leave. Caverhill claims that she rented the property to Pirelli for reduced rent in exchange for him doing some renovations and maintenance. Caverhill asserts that Pirelli owes her as much as $10,000 in rent, along with allegations that he gutted the bathroom and kitchen, changed the locks and declared the home a sovereign embassy. Later, she added that he sent her a bill for $26,000 for his work and put a lien on the house.

Caverhill reports that said Pirelli ignored a previous eviction notice, asserting that he was part of the “Freemen-on-the Land” movement and that Canadian laws do not apply to him. Pirelli was ordered earlier this week to pay the rent and utilities owed, as well as leave the duplex by 12:01 a.m. Saturday.
