A women’s group has reported an increase in verbal and physical assaults against veiled Muslim women in Quebec as a direct result of the emergence of proposed Charter of Values, which is in fact itself deemed by the Parti Québécois’s to curb religious symbols, but now it rather seems to have been producing inflaming social tensions in workplaces. A group that represents almost 17 women’s centres all over the province has revealed that its members are voicing worries and appealing for calm after witnessing disturbing acts of anti-Muslim intolerance, from spitting to racist insults.

A spokesperson for the Regroupement des centres de femmes du Québec, Valérie Létourneau, stated that “it’s obvious. Since the debate over the charter, the increase in intolerance is palpable.” It was added that “it’s contributing to a climate of fear. Veiled women are finding it harder to leave their homes. It’s taken serious proportions. It’s important that this stops.” On the contrary, the PQ government sells its secular charter as a force for unity in the province. However, since its tabling last month, it has further polarized communities of different religions in the province.

At the same time, there have been reports of several isolated events of hostility against Muslims, including a prolongued shouting match on a Montreal bus, captured on video, showing a man yelling at a veiled woman: “We should have never opened the door to you!” On the other hand, former PQ premier Jacques Parizeau has mentioned in a column published in the Journal de Montréal on Thursday, that he thinks the charter goes too far.
