Investigators working under command of the province’s anti-corruption unit have revealed that the former mayor of Montreal, Michael Applebaum, is found to have been engulfed in an alleged system of corruption that has turned out to be much broader than first imagined.
Several documents obtained and reported by La Presse claim that UPAC’s investigation is basically focused on a couple real estate projects in the Cote des Neiges, i.e. NDG borough. Mr. Applebaum was arrested by authorities in June due to charges related to the same two projects, namely the NDG Sports Centre and a condo project near Mount Royal. Documents unveiled that both projects allegedly involved work of zone changing and stirred bribes worth tens of thousands of dollars that took place between 2006 and 2011. Mr. Applebaum is facing charges on 14 different offences, including conspiracy, fraud, breach of trust and corruption in municipal affairs.
According to the newly surfaced documents, the alleged corruption in these projects dates as back as 2002 and continues up to last year. The latest set of real estate projects that are being inspected by the investigators include a condo development on Jean Talon St. near Decarie Blvd. and the Vista Seniors’ Home at the corner of Decarie and Cote St. Luc Rd. Reports show that rezoning for the latter project involved Lee Lalli, i.e. a developer with alleged ties to the mafia, who is deemed to be a close friend of Applebaum. Whereas, the MUHC superhospital is also involved in the investigation, though the details on that aspect of the probe are not yet clear.
