Father of publicly mourned 17-year-old Nova Scotia teen who committed suicide giving up to sufferings caused by cyber bullying, Glen Canning, has revealed that his daughter attempted to convince him that they should go public on the matter. Rehtaeh Parsons case undeviatingly brought the issue of Internet bullying to the forefront of international highlights. Her father has now admitted that she wanted to go to the media months before her death this past April.

Addressing all reporters gathered at a news conference in Montreal this afternoon, Mr. Canning stated that he and Parsons’ mother had concluded at the time that it was inappropriate to go public. However, he now claims that he would go public under similar circumstances. Consequently, he alleged to advise all parents of kids being victimized by cyberbullying and being ignored by authorities to go that route. Canning was present in Montreal to give a lecture prearranged by Concordia University’s Centre for Gender Advocacy, while also extending support for better services for sex assault victims at post-secondary institutions.

Mr. Canning’s daughter suffered bullying for months after an alleged sexual assault. Her family claims that she felt helpless after a digital photo of her allegedly being sexually assaulted was circulated around the school. Since Parsons was admitted to hospital in March 2012, almost five months after the alleged assault, she became suicidal. Pearson’s ended up hanging herself in April this year, though she was hospitalized for three days until her family decided to take off life-support.
