Almost 17 years since the last time a sitting Canadian prime minister visited Malaysia, PM Harper landed in the country’s capital on Saturday. However, the capital city appeared to be mostly consumed by a state visit of new Chinese President, Xi Jinping, which gave the feeling that Harper was rather less attended as he spent his day touring a mosque and a maritime air base and speaking to Canadian business leaders.

Regardless of the low-key day of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, it shall not be perceived that Canadians aren’t competing in Southeast Asia. The emerging economies have turned out to be a shining star in global economic growth, along with a highlighted contribution of a number of Canadian firms. The chief executive officer of Montreal-based CAE, Marc Parent, mentioned that Canada punches “way above our weight” in the aerospace sector, and CAE’s flight simulators and pilot training are part of that success.

Parent pointed out that growing Southeast Asian middle class is a key driver, while highlighting that the ongoing visits of top Canadian officials, including ministers to the Governor General and now the prime minister, have fundamentally helped the cause in recent years. He added that “I can tell you it’s translated into increased business for us in Brunei, in the Philippines and other (regional) nations.” Parent was present at the round table group hosted by PM Harper on Saturday in a downtown hotel, along with executives of other Canadian firms in the region, including Talisman Energy, Bombardier Rail, Teknion Furniture.
