The RCMP is investigating a number of complaints throughout New Brunswick of someone attempting to defraud seniors.

The potential victim receives a call from a person claiming to be an investigator from their bank or their bank manager requesting their help to solve an internal theft. The person is instructed to withdraw several thousand dollars from their bank account, then meet the caller outside the bank or at a designated location where they will exchange the money. Its only after the money has been exchanged that individuals realize they have been a victim of fraud.

On August 9, 2010, the Oromocto RCMP received a report of an elderly woman losing several thousands dollars in this type of fraud. The following day, the same scam was attempted with an elderly woman in Riverview. The Riverview woman however refused to cooperate. A similar type of scam has been done in New Brunswick before. Investigations are ongoing.

"In New Brunswick RCMP jurisdiction, we have had six similar cases reported over the past several years, states Cst. Chantal Farrah. The victims in all of these cases were elderly women, who are trusting individuals, wanting to help. It’s this trust that the con artist takes advantage of and in some cases they will target the same person more than once."
