In a recently released report, Auditor-General Bonnie Lysyk has found that the notorious Ontario gas plant cancellations actually cost way much higher than what was necessary, majorly due to unnecessary political interference by former premier Dalton McGuinty’s staff in cancellation talks. Consequently, Lysyk stated that “Kathleen Wynne and the Liberals should step aside now and call an election.” He alleged that “let people cast judgment on this government. I mean, enough is enough.”

The Tories have previously tried to push for an election during last spring’s budget. Apart from that, the PCs also attempted to table a motion in the legislature this year, which was aimed at forcing a confidence motion on the gas plant matter. However, the motion could have only come for a vote if the Liberals agreed. Consequently, a legislative committee was setup to investigate the gas plant cancellations, which is also tasked to decide whether to pursue contempt of parliament charge against the government. Mr. Hudak refrained from commenting on whether the committee will make its decision, but hinted he would have “more to say” in the next few days.

Even though the next election is not scheduled until the fall of 2015, Ms. Wynne can call an election at any time. Ms. Wynne has numerously apologized for the gas plant matter, but it does not suffice the Tories. In response to her apologies, PC energy critic, Lisa MacLeod, stated “is she sorry today because she genuinely feels badly for selling taxpayers down the drain when they negotiated that contract?” adding “or is she sorry that she got caught?”
