Nova Scotians have decided they want change through the power of ballot, as they awarded decisive seats in recently elections to Stephen McNeil’s Liberals that will help them form a majority government. This move is widely seen as a rebuke of government largesse and rejection of the increased HST, since the NDP loss has turned out to be so insightful that Leader Darrell Dexter is now going to be shifted from government to third-party status, along with losing his own seat in the Halifax area as well.
Meanwhile, Jamie Baillie’s Progressive Conservatives are now anticipated to form the official opposition, which will come as a surprise to many observers and strategists. Election results are showing a direct swap of ridings between the Liberals and the NDP, as they spearheaded in metro Halifax area, along with the rural ridings that helped the NDP form a historic first majority government in 2009.
At the time when results were announced, Mr. McNeil stated that “it is with a deep sense of responsibility and purpose that I will make sure our plan is delivered and our commitments are kept.” Mr. McNeil is now anticipated to become 28th premier of the province, and head the first Liberal government in Nova Scotia since 1999. In a congratulatory statement issued by the Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, in the official capacity, it was mentioned that “I look forward to meeting and working with premier-designate McNeil on issues of importance to Nova Scotians and all Canadians, including promoting jobs, growth and long-term prosperity.”
