In an early appearance right after the drifting results of Nova Scotia election, former Premier Darrell Dexter mentioned on Tuesday that he was completely stunned to see the sudden decline in support that led to the NDP government’s devastating defeat in the provincial election. The 56-year-old politician alleged that it’s hard find out for sure as to why exactly people turned against his party, though he suspects the province’s struggling economy was a key factor.

Addressing reporters after accepting defeat at a Halifax hotel, Dexter alleged that “I didn’t see … this kind of erosion. But in politics you have to deal with what’s in front of you and we’ll move forward.” He added that “this is a difficult time. The economy is difficult. People are feeling stressed and I think when you’re in government you become the focus of that.” Being an enthusiastic basketball fan, Dexter joked about being relieved that he can at least look forward to one thing in the near future, alleging that “the sun will come up tomorrow. There will be an NBA season.”

Losing his own seat by a narrow 31 vote’s margin, Dexter claimed that he will consult with the party’s executive to decide regarding his future as leader of the party. Dexter seemed rather in a philosophical mood while talking about the party’s massive drop in seats and its failure to secure a second term. He stated that “I’m frankly very proud of the work we’ve done over the last four years and we’ll see how history judges it.”
