Provincial court Judge, Alfred Brien, has sentenced a prominent former city councillor and youth worker in Saint John, N.B., Donnie Snook, 18-years in prison on Thursday for sexually abusing and making pornographic images of boys over a period of 12 years. Snook had previously pleaded guilty in May to 46 charges including sexual assault and possessing, distributing and making child pornography.

Court was informed that Snook’s crimes began since January 2001 and went on until his arrest in January of this year. Snook admitted being involved with 17 boys, majority of which were from the Saint John area, and their ages varied from 5 to 15 years at the time of the offences. Judge Brien mentioned while handing down the statement that Snook’s “irresponsible and reckless” actions were an abuse of trust. He alleged that “it’s important for the victims to know that it was not their fault,” while adding that “regretfully, not all of the victims have come to terms with their abuse.”

Snook is being credited 15 months he has already served, which implies that 16 years and nine months are left on his sentence. He will be eligible for parole after serving one-third of that. At the time of his hearing, Snook informed court that he was ashamed of his actions. He mentioned that “If anyone should have known better, it was me,” he said at the time. “I became the very thing I hated most: a person who molested children.”
