Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne is set to announce an extensive plan that is aimed at making large swaths of government data available for public, including a wide range of subjects from hospital wait times to student achievement to traffic gridlock. The announcement says that the data will be posted online in a centralized location, i.e. the government’s Open Data Portal, while Ontarians will be asked to vote online on what government data they want to make public first.

This plan was outlined by Ms. Wynne in an open letter set to release on Monday, in which she sates that “we must…unlock public data so that you can help us solve problems and find new ways of doing things.” Furthermore, it is added that “I believe that government data belongs to the people of Ontario and so we will make government data open by default, limiting access only to safeguard privacy, security and confidentiality.” However, it is unclear as to when exactly will the data be made available. The letter says that the government is appointing an “expert team” that will make recommendations on the subject and every government ministry has been advised to devise a plan to become “open and engaged.”

The plan narrates that the government solicit Ontarians’ input on policy decisions online, using a centralized website. Ms. Wynne vows that the public shall be allowed “a greater say” on transit, economic development and fiscal responsibility. The Open Data Portal was created last year, which will now be massively expanded.
