The senate has brought the question of whether or not to suspend its three highly scandalous members, who are suspected of misspending taxpayer money, in front of all members who will be allowed to vote according to their consciences. The three senators include former Conservatives Pamela Wallin, Mike Duffy and Patrick Brazeau, who are facing a motion that seeks their suspension without pay, which could be tabled in the Red Chamber as early as Tuesday afternoon. The motion tabled by government Senate leader, Claude Carignan, last week, asks to suspend all three without pay for “gross negligence” in managing parliamentary resources.

In a brief answer, Mr. Carignan mentioned while exiting a caucus meeting that Conservative senators will vote “according to what they think.” He added that voting is not expected to take place on Tuesday. In case the senate decides to suspend its members, it would be a precedent-setting decision for the Red Chamber as only one Senator, former Liberal Andrew Thompson, has been suspended without pay in the past. Thompson was suspended because he failed to show up for nearly two consecutive legislative sessions, and resigned soon after the decision.

Several Liberal senators and at least one Conservative have shared their opinion alleging that suspensions are very severe punishments for the senators and do not allow them adequate opportunity to defend themselves. Liberal Senator George Baker said he is concerned that suspending the senators could tamper with possible criminal proceedings, noting that none of the three Senators have been charged by the RCMP.
