The federal site, HealthCare.gov, is reported to have enrolled fewer than 50,000 American people to get new insurance policies. The figure of enrollees includes enrollments from the launch of the website till last week. The official enrollment data are not yet released by the administration and the rumors have not been verified. ’We cannot confirm these numbers,’ said Joanne Peters, spokeswoman for the Health and Human Services Department.
Though the figure remains unofficial, the lowering of predicted enrollment figures by the administration supports unsanctioned press release. The initial number estimated by the administration was 500,000 enrollees which remains to be a goal unfulfilled due to the defective federal website. Even though Obama apologizes and has assured improvement of the site, it remains flawed with prolonged response times and timed out pages. This technological lag reduces the ability of potential customers to complete online application forms leading to a number of enrollees far below the goal set by the White House. Twelve out of the fourteen state exchanges are faring better than HealthCare.gov, with enrollments exceeding 49,000 for Obamacare.
The administration guarantees to fix glitches in the federal website and make it work ‘smoothly for the vast majority of users’ by the end of November. Apart from improving the federal website, the administration is also forced to consider alternatives such as allowing insurance companies to directly enroll customers entitled to the federal subsidy. This seems as the only solution to increase enrollments and reach the target of seven million enrollments by the end of March.
