The Hawaii Senate has passed a bill allowing gay marriages and becoming the 15th nation to legalize same sex marriages. The Hawaii Governor Neil Abercrombie signed the legislation this Wednesday whereas same sex marriages are to begin in the region starting December 2nd. The bill was passed with a vote of nineteen to four in favor of the bill. The state legislature approved it only after fifteen days of the special session called by Governor Neil Abercrombie.
Hawaii is the perfect station for honeymoons and weddings with its romantic beaches, the Aloha spirit and the award winning spas. Hawaii being a state famous for wedding and honeymoon destination is set to become the most popular spot for same sex couples. The approval of this bill makes it a pioneer in promoting the cause of same sex marriages. The Hawaii bill has undergone immense criticism from religious conservatives and so has been passed by the state legislature keeping religious concerns in mind. It explicitly frees clergy from the obligation to perform same sex marriages if carrying them out conflicts with their beliefs.'You can try to force people to do something they don't believe in, but you can't make it so,' said Sam Slom, Republican state Senator, before giving his vote.
President Obama Barack born in Hawaii, praised this decision of the legislature and is the first U.S. president to support same sex marriages. "Whenever freedom and equality are affirmed, our country becomes stronger," said the president "By giving loving gay and lesbian couples the right to marry if they choose, Hawaii exemplifies the values we hold dear as a nation."
