Councillors are set to convene at Toronto’s City Hall for an unusual debate focusing on whether or not Mayor Rob Ford shall continue as a mayor, based on a motion tabled by a former close ally of the Mayor. City councillors are expected to scrutinize the Mayor over his personal behavior on Wednesday, almost a week after he finally stopped denying and admitted having had smoked crack cocaine in a drunken stupor about a year ago.

Upon arriving at City Hall on Wednesday 9:20 am, Mayor Ford moved past a bunch of anxious reporters while on his way to the office. Upon persistent questioning of reporters, Mayor replied that he is “feeling great” and when inquired about the debate ahead, he chuckled and answered that “we’re going to have some fun today.” The motion tabled by Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong was deliberately moved to the top of the agenda by the mayor, which asks him to apologize for misleading Torontonians regarding the existence of an alleged video showing him smoking crack cocaine, to co-operate with police, and to apologize for writing a reference letter for an alleged drug dealer and to take a leave.

Addressing reporters earlier on Wednesday, Mr. Minnan-Wong explained that “‘we need to do the right thing. We need to pass this motion encouraging the mayor to take a leave of absence and apologize for lying and writing letters for individuals that have done bad things, and say we shouldn’t be hanging out with gang members and you shouldn’t be using drugs.”
