Canadian medical teams and engineers have established their home base in the typhoon-ravaged city of Iloilo, Philippines, while more disaster response help is expected to join them soon as well. More Canadian crews are anticipated to arrive on Wednesday evening in Iloilo, which is among the largest cities hit by Typhoon Haiyan, although not among the most heavily damaged areas.

Those residing at the base include almost 70 Foreign Affairs staff and soldiers who were already in or near the Philippines. Additionally, Ontario dispatched 40 more soldiers as part of the Disaster Assistance Response Team, or DART, on Wednesday night, who are also planned to bring important engineering equipment with them. The Philippine ambassador to Canada, Leslie Gatan, explained that a major road to Iloilo has been completely destroyed, which has left several remote communities on the island of Panay in severe need of help and “I think there will be a lot of work for the Canadian team there.” While praising help received from Canada so far, she added that “I’m really struck with extreme appreciation of the extraordinary generosity from Canada, from the government and from the ordinary people.”

On the other hand, Defence Minister Rob Nicholson revealed that a second wave of DART crews were on their way on Wednesday, after Iloilo was selected. He stated that “this is a devastated area, there’s huge loss of life … it was deemed this would be an appropriate place for Canada to make a contribution.”
