Mulcair Scrutinizes Harper over Robocalls Scandal

After a long break of Parliamentary sessions before Remembrance Day, it was the first time that NDP and Opposition leader, Tom Mulcair, and Prime Minister Stephen Harper were facing each other in the House of Commons for questions answer period. Mulcair straightforwardly probed Harper regarding the investigation into the Guelph, Ont., robocall scandal, while openly accusing him of using “weasel words.”

Mulcair repeatedly inquired Harper if Conservative staffers were “ordered” to provide scripted testimony about Michael Sona, who is the only former Conservative campaign worker battling criminal charges in the Guelph robocalls scandal. Sona has been charged with attempting to prevent a voter from casting a ballot, which is related to numerous incidents misleading thousands of voters in the federal riding of Guelph who received robocalls directing them to the wrong polling stations on Election Day in 2011.

Mulcair alleged that Sona was actually on holiday in Aruba, “on a beach in flip-flops” at the time when numerous Conservative staffers gave their testimonies to Elections Canada investigator, Al Mathews, confessing that Sona had boasted to them about having had masterminded the robocalls.  Sona has openly denied the charges against him, as he bluntly alleged that he is being set up to take the blame. In response to Mulcair’s queries Harper reiterated in a composed tone that the he believes anyone responsible for the robocalls must be held accountable. Mulcair personally asked all the NDP questions from the Prime Minster for the first half of question period, which also included inquiry about the Senate expenses scandal.
