The deceiving fake dentist who placed hundreds of patients at risk by operating an illegal practice out of his Burnaby basement suite has finally ended up behind bars in B.C. 62-year-old Wu Tung Sheng was presented in B.C. Supreme Court, without a lawyer, on Friday before beginning his three-month sentence.

The proceedings began after a Mandarin interpreter joined court, when Associate Chief Justice Austin Cullen read Mr. Wu the reasons for judgment first announced in October. He was convicted in absentia for continuing to practise without a licence despite a 2003 court order. Mr. Wu was told that in addition to serving three months behind bars, he will have to repay “special costs” incurred by the College of Dental Surgeons of British Columbia during the investigation. Though the figure has not yet been finalized, it is pegged to be “well over $150,000.”

Addressing reporters outside the courthouse on Friday, college registrar and CEO, Jerome Marburg, alleged that the college is satisfied to know that Mr. Wu will no longer be able to harm others and hopes the sentence sends a message. He stated that “it should send a message, first of all, to anybody who is contemplating going to see a dentist, or doctor, or anybody, that they check to make sure that person is competent, qualified and safe, and that if there’s a problem they have recourse.” It was added that “hopefully it [also] sends a message to others out there who wish to try and do things illegally that it doesn’t pay.”
