In light of a recent fire outbreak in a trailer compound, an emergency evacuation is taking place at the Attawapiskat First Nation community that has forced dozens of residents out of their homes. An estimate of 70 residents have planned to fly out to Kapuskasing, i.e. located about 400 kilometers south of the James Bay Coast community, under supervision of the Ontario government. The first flight is anticipated to depart on Saturday afternoon.

Editor at netnewsledger.com, James Murray, revealed that the fire initiated from a candle that was left unattended in one of the trailers. He speculated that at least 40 residents were present in temporary shelter at the time when fire broke out. The blaze washed away week of efforts for the remote northern Ontario community. Murray added that a “domino effect” of problems resulted after a major wind storm blew through the area early this week, when up to 90 km/h wind resulted in power outage in the community of 2,000. Consequently, while attempting to restore power, a sewer pipe broke, affecting a water treatment plant. Conclusively, officials had to announce a state of emergency on Friday.

The NDP MP for the area, Charlie Angus, has called the housing complex a “giant set of construction trailers with little holding cells that families are living in.” Quite noticeably, Attawapiskat came into limelight for its tense relations with federal government, representing all First Nations during 2011 housing crisis that triggered a state of emergency. At the time, Prime Minister Stephen Harper accused the band of mismanaging finances.
