New Democratic Leader Andrea Horwath says her motion calling for a possible future Scarborough subway stop to be named in honour of Nelson Mandela is a fitting way to honour the legacy of the late South African leader.
“Mr. Mandela – known lovingly as Madiba – was a great leader, and a man of the people,” said Horwath. “He was an inspiration to many Canadians, and I hope this tribute will keep his memory alive in future generations.”
The motion, passed by unanimous consent in the legislative assembly today, reads “should the Scarborough subway be extended, the Legislative Assembly recommend to the board of commissioners overseeing the Toronto Transit Commission that the first subway stop be named Nelson Mandela Station.”
“I’m grateful that all three parties could come together to support the motion I introduced today,” said Horwath. “Canada, and the world, owes a debt of gratitude to Mr. Mandela, and this is just a simple gesture to remind Ontarians of his importance.”
