In light of the recently grown numbers of flu cases in Edmonton area, Alberta Health Services has announced to have added more holiday flu immunization clinics in the city. According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the senior medical officer of health at Alberta Health Services, Dr. Gerry Predy, it was alleged that the number of lab-confirmed cases of influenza in Edmonton as of Friday have apparently doubled to total of 256 cases, out of which 236 were those of H1N1.

Dr. Predy mentioned that “the lab-confirmed cases are just the tip of the iceberg,” and that “there’s lots more influenza out there, those tend to be the more serious ones.” Furthermore, it was explained that “normally, we would monitor influenza activity throughout the community through looking at school absentees, but of course, in the last two weeks we can’t do that.” Consequently, Predy concluded “so we don’t have a really good measure of how much activity there is out in the community.”

Speaking about the statistics of Alberta, Predy alleged that 662 confirmed cases have been established in the lab, while 621 of those are H1N1. Out of these, 31 have required hospitalization, along with having an effect on some elective surgeries in local hospitals. Dr. Predy elucidated that four elective cardiac surgeries had to be cancelled since the perfusionist, who would work to support heart and lung function during surgery, had to be taken off surgery to work with flu patients. However, Predy assured that all of those surgeries were completed later on afterwards.
