This year was like no other for Deputy Mayor Norm Kelly, who acquired more power at city hall after Toronto council voted to abridge several authorities enjoyed by Toronto Mayor Rob Ford in light of his admission of drug use. Even after the serious events of this year, Kelly alleged that he hasn’t ruled out supporting Ford in the upcoming municipal elections.
During an exclusive interview, Kelly advised the mayor, that “he’s working hard on his weight, maybe if he works as hard on other personal issues — who knows who he might be sometime from now?” Mr. Norm Kelly, an expert Scarborough politician and Ford ally, was appointed as Deputy Mayor in August after Doug Holyday gave up his position to run in a provincial byelection. Soon after the drug admission by the mayor, Mr. Kelly counseled him to take a leave of absence. However, when it was clear that Ford didn’t intend to resign or take a leave of absence, the council forcibly stripped the mayor of most of his powers and gave them to Kelly.
Regardless of these incidents, Kelly alleged that his relationship with the mayor hasn’t changed much. He mentioned that Mr. Ford, who still holds the mayoral position of the city, is a “shy guy” who largely keeps to himself. He alleged that “I don’t think we’re getting in each other’s way.” Moving forward, Kelly said he hopes personal issues will remain “outside of the body politic and outside of the political discourse of the city of Toronto.”
