Canadian government officials have reiterated that reports about a New Democrat MP being placed under a house arrest in her hotel room in Sri Lanka are false. According to the spokesperson for the International Affairs department, Caitlin Workman, officials at the Canadian High Commission in Colombo have spoken with Rathika Sitsabaiesan, who is a New Democrat representing the Toronto-area riding of Scarborough-Rouge River, and have positively confirmed her well-being to them.

In a story published earlier in the week by The Columbo Gazette, it was alleged that Ms. Sitsabaiesan, Sri Lankan born visiting the country on a personal tour, was under house arrest. Later, the newspaper updated its story to add that the police authorities are denying the claims, along with denials from immigration officials and the Sri Lankan army. A Tamil website, TamilNet, also posted an article on Tuesday night alleging that Ms. Sitsabaiesan is being confined to her hotel, adding that the authorities have stationed officers to prevent anyone from meeting the MP.

However, Ms. Workman assured that this is not true. She confirmed that the Canadian High Commission has contacted relevant Sri Lankan police and immigration authorities, all of whom have confirmed that no arrest warrants have been issued so far. Additionally, Ms. Workman stated that “Canadian officials in Ottawa have spoken to the Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Canada who has been in contact with her authorities in Sri Lanka who have confirmed to her that media reports of a house arrest are false.”
