There might be a civil war developing among Conservative for the nomination of new riding of Calgary Signal Hill as a revamped federal-political scenario starts shaping in the city. In an announcement made on Monday, Former provincial cabinet minister, Ron Liepert, revealed that he is considering challenging Conservative incumbent, Rob Anders, for the Tory nomination in Signal Hill in an effort to depose the controversial MP.
The announcement first appeared on Monday at a website, timetodobetter.ca, which alleged to be aiming at Anders, asserting that “we think it’s time for a change and the team is in place to make that happen.” Liepert mentioned that “I just think it’s time that people got organized and put this guy out to pasture.” He decided not to run again in the 2012 provincial election after serving eight years as a Progressive Conservative MLA. Talking about Anders, Liepert alleged that “he can call us Liberals and what the hell else he wants to call us, but . . . he knows damn well he’s in trouble.”
Anders was previously challenged by current Premier, Alison Redford, in 2004 when Liepert served as her campaign manager. During an interview on Monday, Anders alleged that a small group of Red Tories is recruiting Liberals and NDP “fellow travellers” to buy Conservative party memberships to defeat him. He alleged that “you always have to be concerned about it because what they’re basically trying to do is hijack the Conservative nomination … by using people who aren’t really Conservative.”
