The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has concluded an investigation that mostly relied on evidence from surveillance video and has culminated in charges related to three separate murders last year in New Westminster and Surrey. The officer in charge of IHIT, Supt. Kevin Hackett, revealed that 32-year-old Sarbjit Bains was arrested on Friday and charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Jill Lyons and Karen Nabors, along with a second-degree murder and indignity to human remains in connection with the death of Amritpal Saran.
In addition to Bains, 36-year-old Evelina Urbaniak was also arrested Friday and charged with indignity to human remains and accessory after the fact in Saran’s murder. During an elaborate press conference held at RCMP’s E Division Headquarters in Surrey on Monday, Hackett mentioned that “I would like to point out that security camera and video surveillance played a crucial and key role in securing evidence.” Remains of Saran’s body were found in the 12100-block of Colebrook Road on Feb. 24 last year, while Lyons’ body was found on Aug. 12 in her suite at Elmwood Apartments in New Westminster. Almost two weeks later, on Aug. 25, Nabors’ body was found inside her apartment in the same complex.
Sgt. Jennifer Pound mentioned that Bains is the only person linking the three victims, as she alleged that “we’re not going to say that it’s totally random, but we’re not going to speak further about that either.” She added that “it will all come out in court. Unfortunately, that’s a detail we have to keep to ourselves right now.”
