In an elaborate press conference on Tuesday by the president of the Toronto Region Board of Trade, Carol Wilding, she alleged that Toronto’s business community is extremely frustrated over the drama spilled over by the City Hall in 2013. She complained that the council “boiled over” in the past, and urged the candidates in this year’s municipal election to demonstrate “higher standards of performance.”
Ms. Wilding highlighted that crucial issues like building transportation, dealing with aging infrastructure, job creation, and closing the gap between rich and poor shall be given ultimate priority at the council but they have been prioritized below “dramatics and personalities.” She alleged that “people are tired of the frustrations. They want to get onto the aspiration, and they want to get onto dealing with the critical issues that matter to the Toronto region.” Ms. Wilding launched a campaign labeled as “Think Twice, Vote Once,” in which she urged candidates in the 2014 municipal election, along with possible Ontario provincial election, to focus on crucial issues for the region, instead of focus on politics and personalities. She reiterated that “our political leaders must enable progress, not hinder it.”
Even though Ms. Wilding’s remarks seemed to be aimed at the most noticeably scandal of last year, which erupted after Toronto Mayor Rob Ford admitted having had smoked crack cocaine, when the board of trade also urged him to temporarily step aside, Ms. Wilding mentioned that the campaign is “absolutely not” focused on booting Mr. Ford out of office. She clarified that “we don’t endorse candidates. We never have. We’re non-partisan.”
