The health minister for the Northwest Territories, Glen Abernethy, recently alleged that residents must be careful in stopping the spread of the flu, as he advised that panicking would definitely not help. In response to the critical reports of a woman’s death in Alberta due to a strain of H5N1, also known as bird flu, Abernethy revealed that it’s the first such death in North America.

Abernethy mentioned that “H5N1 is different than H1N1. There was one reported case of a death related to H5N1 in Alberta and it’s the first one in North America. Our professionals here and our chief public health officer, Dr. Andre Corriveau, are clearly monitoring what the feds are doing.” Abernethy also acknowledged that at least 43 confirmed cases of the H1N1 strain of the flu are counted in the NWT as well. He confessed that the outbreak is indeed one of the most important challenges he had faced during his relatively short time as health minister.

Furthermore, Abernethy elucidated that “the health of our residents is obviously important to me and it’s one of many issues that we are trying to deal with here in the Northwest Territories with respect to the provision of health care overall. We have responded to the concern people have and we are continuing to provide flu shots. We are offering some extra flu clinics. Last Thursday is when I believe it started and we are giving out as many as 350 doses a day.” He revealed that NWT has sufficient flu vaccine doses, and he encourages everyone to get a flu shot.
