A surprising announcement made by the spokesperson for Bombardier, Haley Dunne, on Tuesday revealed that the company has decided to lay off almost 1,700 employees from its aerospace division, mostly in Montreal, in its attempt to fight delays with two new aircraft and a tough market. The company disclosed the decision to its workforce in an internal memo explaining that affected employees will be notified in the coming weeks.

Explaining its move, Bombardier Inc. mentioned that it aims to preserve cash amid delays in the CSeries commercial jet and Learjet 85 business jet, as it also faces tough market conditions. The company has yet to disclose whether the job cuts will affect Bombardier’s Downsview plant, where the Q400 turboprop and Global Express jet are built. President of Unifor Local 112, Roland Kiehne, who represents 1,800 Bombardier employees at Downsview, stated that “there are no details, though we may hear something later today or tomorrow.” He added that “I can tell you people will be on edge. People will be nervous.”

This important announcement has come only a short while after Bombardier, i.e. one of the world’s largest aircraft manufacturers, revealed that its new CSeries commercial jet will not be ready for service until the second half of 2015, i.e. several months later than its already-delayed previous goal. According to company officials, the layoff is anticipated to affect six per cent of the workforce at Bombardier Aerospace, i.e. one of the company’s two main divisions. Bombardier is often credited as one of the world’s largest producers of equipment for transit systems.
