A well-known national Muslim organization, The National Council of Canadian Muslims, has demanded the Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper, to publicly apologize and retract the comments made by his chief spokesperson on the official government’s website. The alleged comments said, according to the organization, that the group has links to terrorists.

A notice of libel was issued by The National Council of Canadian Muslims asserted that it intends to sue Mr. Harper and the Prime Minister’s Office director of communications, Jason MacDonald, for the comments made by them to Sun News earlier this month. Denouncing criticism from the Muslim group on January 18, the PMO spokesperson had stated that “we will not take seriously criticism from an organization with documented ties to a terrorist organization such as Hamas.” According to the Muslim council, it was necessary to include Mr. Harper in the threatened suit because it claims that Mr. MacDonald was undoubtedly “acting as the representative and under the direction” of the Prime Minister.

In a supplementary statement issued by the Executive Director of Muslim council, Ihsaan Gardee, he stressed that the group does not have any ties to Hamas. He mentioned in the statement that “by maliciously attacking [the council] instead of addressing the substance of our legitimate concerns, the PMO is trying to intimidate and silence dissenting voices.” Furthermore, it was added that the act “undemocratic and goes against everything Canadians expect from a responsible government.”
