Several dozen veterans and their supporters are simultaneously staging protests outside eight Veterans Affairs offices across the country to express their disapproval about today’s closures of the offices. The protesters are wearing black themed arm bands while demonstrating outside the offices in Kelowna, Saskatoon, Brandon, Thunder Bay, Windsor, Sydney, Charlottetown and Corner Brook.

The government has announced its plans to move majority of its services offered at veteran affairs offices on the web. In addition to that, the government has announced to provide a Veterans Affairs specialist at Service Canada locations. However, the decision still managed to irritate several veterans, who claim that the changes will leave them without easy access to services they need.

An Afghan vet, Bruce Moncur, alleged that the Veterans Affairs office in his town of Windsor is set to close and so he will now have to travel to London, Ont. in case he wants to speak with someone in person. He alleged that the change angers him, because “nothing can replace face-to-face with your case worker and being able to drive five minutes to your local branch.” Moreover, he suffered a serious brain injury in 2006 that left him with short-term memory problems and PTSD, and so he is fatigued and won’t be able to handle the long commute. He alleged that “If I mentally exert myself by driving for more than three hours, which is how long I’d have to drive to get to London, it taxes me and I’m essentially useless for the rest of the day.”
