Students at Memorial University have made several complaints against a computer science professor for giving an assignment that expected them to develop a software program capable of figuring out the probability that a rape victim would commit suicide. Although majority of students refused to speak on record, but several staged their disarray over the assignment through the e-mail correspondence and many others used Facebook posts to reveal that they were offended by the language used by Professor John Shieh.

According to university authorities, the students brought the case forward to the Computer Science department head and the Sexual Harrassment Office as The Students’ Union formally fielded complaints. In response to the news, Director of External Affairs, Candace Simms, alleged she was shocked to see the assignment description and alleged that she couldn’t believe a professor, someone in a position of power, would trivialize sexual assault and mental health issues in this way.

A second-year female computer science student, who was not in the 3710 class to whom the assignment was handed out, alleged that she believes the professor might have been trying to spread awareness of an important issue but she highlighted that it was the wrong outlet to do so. Another 25-year-old female student mentioned anonymously that she doesn’t believe that any action should be taken against the professor. However, she did add that she would like this to serve as a lesson for others regarding when it is and isn’t appropriate to discuss issues like victim blaming.
