Funeral is being held for 41-year-old Alain Magloire who was shot and killed by Montreal police last Monday. Magloire, who is survived by his two daughters, is scheduled to be laid to rest this afternoon in Longueuil, Que. Previously, Magloire worked as a researcher in biochemistry, and volunteered to help children with disabilities. He was the son of former Haitian Minister of Justice, Rene Magloire.

The Quebec Coroner’s Office made a surprise announcement to initiate a public inquiry into Magloire’s death on Feb. 7. Commenting on the announcement, Alain’s brother, Peter Magloire, alleged that “this is the best news that we could get.” He added that “I’m living a nightmare. Sometimes I even wake up and I’m crying while I’m sleeping.” Many unanswered questions come to mind after hearing about the incident, when police responded to a regular 9-1-1 calls. The caller informed police about a man who was attacking someone with a hammer. Police arrived at the scene and requested an officer with a Taser gun to help restrain Magloire, however before that help could arrive, some other officer shot Magloire, after which he died in a hospital a short while afterwards.

A news release has explained that the inquiry will look into procedures adopted during emergency interventions involving people who may have mental health issues. The press release explained that “the chief coroner believes this inquiry will be useful, notably for informing the public on the probable causes and circumstances surrounding this death.”
