Coalition Avenir Quebec Leader, François Legault, mentioned in a recent statement that the threat of a referendum on sovereignty was the key ballot question in mind of voters during the Quebec election, which singularly Callowed the Liberals to win by default. Explaining the after election scenario in his mind, he alleged that while Parti Québécois will hold another divisive debate on sovereignty and when to hold a referendum, the CAQ will position itself as the real alternative to the Liberals.

CAQ stated that Liberals will no longer be allowed to win an election without any effort simply due to the threat of another PQ referendum. He stated that “this was a quasi-referendum election and I deplore it.” Moreover, Mr. Legault alleged that “the imaginary country harms in many ways the real country. We need to be aware of this and we need to reflect upon it.” According to Mr. Legault, the voters were afraid that if the PQ won a majority government it would have held another referendum.

Mr. Legault stated that “when polls showed a PQ majority government, when they saw Pierre Karl Péladeau with his fist in the air saying he wanted Quebec to be a country, people found themselves in a referendum election.” Making a farfetched prediction, Mr. Legault alleged that he thinks the PQ members will tear each other apart trying to devise another strategy to achieve sovereignty while the vast majority of Quebeckers want nothing to do with another referendum.
