An announcement from the Prime Minister’s Office has confirmed that former federal finance minister who died a sudden death recently, Jim Flaherty, will be honoured as a statesman. The statement issued on Friday revealed that a state funeral would be held in Toronto next Wednesday.

Generally, state funerals are held for former and current prime ministers, governors general and sitting members of cabinet, but the honour can be awarded to any well-known Canadian upon the prime minister’s wish. A statement issued by Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, alleged that “Jim was a great friend and colleague, a dedicated family man, and an extraordinary minister of finance who sacrificed an enormous amount in his years of service to Canada and to Canadians.” Moreover, it added that “he will be remembered with great affection and respect.”

64-year-old Flaherty passed away due to an alleged heart attack at his Ottawa condo less than a month after resigning from cabinet to spend more time with his family and start a new career in the private sector. At the time of his death, Mr. Flaherty was accompanied by a doctor and family friend, Labour Minister Kellie Leitch, who tried to revive him but failed. Flags were raised to half-mast at all government buildings on Friday to honour Flaherty, who was planning an annual summer golf vacation to Ireland with some friends after quitting politics. Mr. Flaherty served as the MP for Whitby-Oshawa since 2006 and was finance minister for eight years.
