Ontario’s Transportation Minister, Glen Murray, has promised that commuters will be travelling on GO trains powered by electricity within a decade, and they’ll not have to wait more than 15 minutes for a train to show up. Addressing the audience at an Etobicoke train maintenance centre on Thursday, Murray and Premier Kathleen Wynne promised to build a regional express system in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area and beyond that will dramatically cut existing commute times.

The announcement was made as part of the minority Liberal government prebudget rollout and complemented an earlier announcement made this week where Wynne pledged $29 billion in dedicated transit funds. The budget set to be voted upon on May 1 will trigger an election if fails to acquire a confidence vote. According to Murray, the GO trains would run “all day in both directions every 15 minutes” and that “this competes now with the standards set in Paris, London in the United Kingdom and gives us 15-minute rapid rail service all across every corner of the GTHA (Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area).” He added that “this will double the ridership of GO over the next decade.”

According to an earlier $4-million study released by GO in 2011, the cost of electrifying the Georgetown and Lakeshore lines was estimated to be approximately about $1.8 billion. Whereas, Metrolinx expected that GO’s ridership of about 65 million trips a year will double by 2031.
