One of the victims of the guilty military medic who fondled female recruits during physicals, James Wilks, lashed out at his 30-month sentence and alleged that the short sentence sends a message Canada’s military doesn’t take sexual crimes seriously. According to a statement issued by Kristen Harms on Monday, she alleged that “I am really disappointed in it. I thought he should have done a year for each victim,” adding that “I thought the military was trying to make it look like they were taking things more seriously, but it doesn’t seem like they are doing that with this short sentence.”

Wilks was sentenced by a military judge on Monday after being found guilty of 10 counts of sexual assault and 15 counts of breach of trust for conducting medical exams that included bogus breast exams on military recruits. Record shows that a total of sixteen women testified at his court martial, which confirmed that Wilks asked them strip to their underwear and comply with a breast exams. The incidents took place between 2003 and 2009 in London and Thunder Bay, while Wilks was found guilty in November.

According to Harms, she was hoping for the maximum 10-year sentence, but would have preferred Wilks received one year for each assault. She stated that “it seems like they can do what they want and get away with it, without doing much time.” Even though the identities of the complainants are protected by court order, Harms asked the court that her name stand on the public record.
