A Canadian woman whose husband and a former aide to ex-Egyptian president Mohammed Morsi, Khaled Al-Qazzaz, is being held in Egyptian prison is seeking help from Ottawa to set him free. Sarah Attia alleged that she got in touch with Foreign Affairs Minister, John Baird, before he visited Egypt hoping that he would urge his Egyptian counterparts to release her husband.

In a statement issued by Attia on Monday, she explained that “since they were going to Egypt and interacting with the current Egyptian military regime there, it was a huge opportunity for them to really speak about Khaled and demand that he be brought home right away.”  And now, Attia claims that she plans to meet with Baird and “see what was done in Cairo.” Al-Qazzaz was arrested along with Morsi and eight other presidential aides on July 3, 2013, i.e. the same day the Egyptian military ousted Morsi from office. It has been 300 days since Al-Qazzaz was arrested but he is yet to be charged.

In addition to that, Attia planned to meet with her Mississauga, Ont. MP, Stella Ambler, on Tuesday to discuss Al-Qazzaz’s case. She alleged that “he needs to come home now, and I think that Canada is in a position to help me do that.” According to Attia, the two met while studying at the University of Toronto and moved to Egypt in 2005 to launch an educational project. The couple has four children between the ages of one-and-a-half and eight.
