Ontario Liberal Leader, Kathleen Wynne, has kicked off her provincial election campaign defending attacks from the federal government instead of her provincial opponents. In the last 24 hours, Prime Minister Stephen Harper and two of his top ministers directly complained about Wynne’s government over pensions, finance and natural resources. In response to these attacks, Wynne said on Saturday that “if the federal government wants to be part of this (election) campaign, I need to protect Ontario.”

According to a statement issued by Harper on Friday, Wynne’s budget proposal to create a provincial pension plan would force Ontarians without an existing plan to contribute out of their paycheques. In response to the allegations, Wynne replied that “if Prime Minister Harper isn’t interested in partnering with us (on pensions) he should move out of the way.” In addition to that, Finance Minister Joe Oliver mentioned on Saturday that the recently tabled Liberal budget was a roadmap for economic decline. In response to him, Wynne said that federal government slayed its deficit “off the backs of the provinces.” According to Wynne, feds have unjustly cut Ontario’s transfer payments and said that the federal government “has not stepped up on the Ring of Fire.”

Federal Natural Resources Minister, Greg Rickford, added that the claim about feds not helping with the mining project was “nonsense.” Whereas Wynne replied on Saturday that if her opponents, namely Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak and NDP Leader Andrea Horwath, “aren’t interested in taking on the criticism (from the feds),” then she will “stand up for Ontario.”
