A renowned national Muslim group, The National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM), has announced to have officially filed a defamation lawsuit against the prime minister. According to an official statement issued by the NCCM on Monday, it revealed to have launched the suit after Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, failed to apologize for linking the organization with the terrorist group Hamas. In addition to the PM, the suit also names Harper’s spokesman, Jason MacDonald.
The NCCM requested Mr. Harper on Jan. 16 to reconsider whether or not to allow Rabbi Daniel Korobkin of Toronto to be part of an official delegation to Israel. According to the group, Korobkin had defended and praised anti-Muslim campaigners. In response to the group’s request, MacDonald stated that “we will not take seriously criticism from an organization with documented ties to a terrorist organization such as Hamas.” Whereas, in retaliation, NCCM executive director, Ihsaan Gardee, called MacDonald’s statement a “false accusation.”
According to a press release issued by Mr. Gardee on Monday, he said that “in order to uphold its good name, the NCCM has no choice but to issue a statement of claim for defamation against Mr. MacDonald and the prime minister.” Consequently, the PMO now has 30 days to respond to the statement of claim. NCCM’s lawyer, Jeff Saikaley, alleged that “in defamation suits, everything is complicated.” He added that “the PMO could try to prove ties to Hamas, in which case they’d have to bring evidence.”
