In a surprising development, the NDP leader Andrea Horwath brought an iPad to a crowd on Monday morning and showed off a program that voters can download to calculate how much they’d save if they elected a New Democrat government on June 12. After an early morning appearance on City-TV’s Breakfast Television program, Horwath alleged that “using our savings calculator and answering some simple questions, people will get an idea of how much they could save with our plan.”
According to Horwath, her savings calculator simply factors in promises like a 15 per cent cut to auto insurance rates, evaluates the provincial portion of the HST off electricity bills, freezing the cost of university and college tuition, a home caregiver tax credit and loans to homeowners for energy efficiency retrofits. In addition to that, Horwath explained that the 15 per cent auto insurance reduction is applied from last year since she was the first to convince the minority Liberal government budget to include it in the budget, which the NDP subsequently support. Thereafter, the Financial Services Commission of Ontario claims the rates are down about six per cent on average, which leaves another nine percentage points to go.
In addition to that, Horwath alleged to have spoken to citizens who haven’t seen any reduction in their insurance at all. Apart from this, the NDP leader is spending the day in preparation for Tuesday night’s televised leaders’ debate with Liberal counterpart Kathleen Wynne and Conservative boss Tim Hudak.
