Suffering from week and a half of rotating strikes, cancelled extra-curricular activities and endless rhetoric from both sides involved in the labour dispute in schools, students have finally decided to stand up and say enough is enough and they will not be caught in the middle anymore. Thousands of students are planned to walk off from the school across the province today.
Through this protest, students are trying to show their frustration and are saying they are tired of being caught in the middle of this dispute. A student complained that “get something done because it has been striking for I think at least two weeks now, and in these two weeks they’ve made a lot of influence to students across the entire province, and especially to people like the grads.” Another complained that “shows have been cancelled, like a drama show, and they have been preparing for months and it was actually closing night and it was postponed because of one of the strike days.”
The district has warned parents that since the students will be off of school property, it will not be responsible for their safety. Whereas, administrators claim they would rather see the students do something else. According to Superintendent John Lewis with the North Vancouver School District, the walkouts are disruptive to both the school and the community. Lewis complained that students should take their message directly to the teachers and the BC Public School Employers Association on their own time, rather than the school’s.
