The company running a B.C. dairy farm under controversy for animal abuse, Chilliwack Cattle Company, has announced to have terminating “all employees” who were secretly recorded punching and kicking cows. According to the statement issued by the company on Tuesday, “we are taking immediate action to terminate all employees involved as well as take several steps to ensure that this type of abuse never happens again.”

The video was recorded by an animal rights group, Mercy for Animals, which went undercover at the farm in May, secretly recording incidents of alleged animal abuse, including the use of chains, canes, rakes and other objects to hit and beat cows. Consequently, the video was brought to the BC SPCA last week, which recommended animal cruelty charges against eight workers at the Chilliwack farm. The statement issued on Tuesday further added that Chilliwack Cattle will be working with the BC SPCA to implement longer training periods for new employees, along with providing better animal welfare training for all of its current workers. In addition to that, the company promised to install closed circuit security cameras at the facility.

Kooyman stated that “we deeply apologize for what happened,” adding that his family was “shocked” by the footage. He explained that “this does not reflect at all on the care or respect our family has for animals and we will do everything necessary to make sure this never happens again.” The milk from Kooyman’s farm is purchased by Saputo, a large corporation that sells dairy products across the country.

  1. I am from Vancouver and I wanted to say that im not surprised about what happened at this dairy farm in Chilliwack. Most large farms in Canada use foreign workers on their farms because the wages are low and the working conditions bad.Needless to say workers from Canada won’t take that kind of work.A lot of the foreign farm workers don’t get pacomment_ID for their work and they live in squalcomment_ID conditions. If I had to make a guess at it I would say that these farm workers at the dairy farm in Chilliwack got low wages and the working conditions were bad. What can you expect wnen conditions are like that.Im not condoning what happened at this farm but unless working conditions change this sort of thing will happen again.
These farm workers need a union so that their wages can improve and also their working conditions.Without a union that can’t happen.
