The identity of a young woman has become a bone of contention between the government and the family amid ongoing struggle and several tragic consequences of persistent online harassment. The particular case involves an alleged sexual assault claims that resulted in child pornography charges currently that are currently before the court.

However, since the charges are now before the court, her parents and media organizations are restricted from revealing her sad narrative or advocating on her behalf because of a statutory publication ban intended to protect her by shielding her identity. According to the teen’s mother, “I think it’s actually ridiculous — no one was here to protect her when she was here and now they’re talking about protecting the victim’s rights, so it’s just kind of a mockery and a slap in the face.” She explained that “her story has helped so many other people … so it is really important to not silence people who are already scared to come out and tell their story.”

Meanwhile, the ban was upheld by the provincial court in Halifax after two teens were charged with distributing child pornography in connection with the case, one of which also faces charges of making child pornography. However, the victimized teen died last year following a suicide attempt. Regardless, a judge recently upheld the decision to keep the identity or any information leading to her identity hidden, as required by the Criminal Code, which states that a judge “shall” order such a ban in every case where child pornography is alleged.
