A Montreal woman has been charged for criminal negligence causing death after she was arrested for triggering a deadly collision near Montreal, which cost two lives, while she was helping a family of ducks cross the road. A jury convicted 25-year-old Emma Czornobaj on Friday, finding her guilty of dangerous driving causing death and criminal negligence causing the deaths of 50-year-old motorcyclist, Andre Roy, and his 16-year-old daughter Jessie.
The jury heard that the father and daughter were dashed into the air after they rear-ended Czornobaj’s car, which she had parked in the left lane of Highway 30, just outside of Montreal in Candiac, Quebec, on June 27, 2010. It was revealed that driving a Honda Civic, Czornobaj stopped her car and got out to save several ducks, gesturing for them to move, when the motorcyclists slammed into her car. In her testimony, Czornobaj alleged that she was only trying to rescue the 8 ducks. Meanwhile, the jury heard that another motorist barely missed hitting Czornobaj’s car, who witnessed Roy and his daughter crash their Harley-Davidson into the vehicle. He revealed that “I saw a body go over the car like a rag doll,” both of whom died right after the impact.
It was established that despite her three years of driving experience, Czornobaj failed to switch on her hazard lights when she stopped her car. Czornobaj is new scheduled to be sentenced sometime in August. The maximum sentence for dangerous driving causing death is 14 years in prison.
