Justin Trudeau’s Liberals claim to have had a breakthrough night in the four recent federal byelections held on Monday, mostly by overcoming the majority previously held by Thomas Mulcair’s NDP. The Liberals were able to win one riding from the NDP in downtown Toronto, hold on to one in Toronto, and turn out to be an impressive runners up to the Conservatives in two Alberta ridings.

Trudeau has successfully banked a seat from the Conservatives since becoming the party’s leader last year, and now grabbed another from the New Democrats on Monday night in downtown Toronto, which was previously held by Olivia Chow. Chow resigned from her seat in the House of Commons to run for mayor of Toronto. On the other hand, Liberal candidate Kyle Harrietha was able to grab the second place against Conservative David Yurdiga in the northeastern Alberta riding of Fort McMurray-Athabasca, i.e. the conservative’s stronghold since 1968. Latest poll results show that Harrietha managed 35% of the vote against Yurdiga’s 47%, which is the best that the Liberals were able to do in the riding since 1980. Whereas, Yurdiga’s less than 50% support is a steep decline from her predecessor, Jean who scored 72% votes in 2011 and 67% in 2008.

However, the Conservatives were able to score an easy win in the riding of Macleod in southwestern Alberta. Conservative candidate John Barlow remained victorious on Monday’s federal race and will now succeed Ted Menzies in a riding that conservative parties have held since 1958.
