The authorities have announced to have lifted emergency evacuation order for the Town of Tecumseh as it previously urged all residents and businesses within a one kilometre radius of the Bonduelle plant to evacuate immediately. Consequently, the officials have confirmed that the residents living between County Road 22 to the south, St. Thomas Road to the North, Lesperance Road to the west and Manning Road to the east, are now allowed to return home.

The evacuation order was prompted by ammonia leak from a tank filled with ammonia, which caused a risk to air quality. Although the evacuation order is lifted, the town still remains under a state of emergency. According to the fire officials, although the progress is slow but it is being made and firefighters are battling the massive blaze at the Bonduelle plant in Tecumseh.

Bonduelle mentioned in a statement that the damage at the plant is “considerable” and that the cause is yet to be undetermined. It stated that “it is probable that it will be very difficult for the plant to operate for the current production campaign” and added that “the delays and production re-launch plans will only be able to be determined after detailed examination of the damage to the plant.” Additionally, Bonduelle assured that so far there are no deaths caused by the fire. Meanwhile, Tecumseh Mayor Gary McNamara revealed that the plant usually employs up to 700 workers during the peak production season.
